Budget Friendly Kitchen Makeover Tips & Tricks

How to Implement a Budget Friendly Kitchen Makeover

Refresh Your Kitchen Without Remodeling It
Your kitchen has a nice structure, which is one reason why you fell in love with your house in the first place. You’ve made some great meals and even greater memories in it over the years. Recently, you’ve noticed thought that your kitchen looks a little worn and outdated. Doing one or more of these budget friendly kitchen makeover tips will make your space look fresh and more high-end without the cost of a complete kitchen remodel. These ten updates are favorites among kitchen design experts.

Top Ten Budget Friendly Kitchen Makeover Tips

Refinish or Replace Cabinets
Your cabinets are the first things that you probably notice when you enter your kitchen. They are located just above eye level for most people and have the potential to worsen the look of your kitchen if they’re outdated or not properly maintained. If you inherited kitchen cabinets that are made of low-quality materials, then it’s time to refresh your kitchen with cabinets that are made of genuine wood. If your wood cabinets are in good shape structurally, consider cleaning them thoroughly and refinishing them. Letting the wood’s natural colors and grains show through on the cabinets is an option for some kitchen décor themes. Other homeowners take the opportunity to create drama by painting their cabinets in lively accent colors. If you decide to get new cabinets, try to reuse the old ones for storage in obscure places such as your garage, mud room or gardening shed.

Update Hardware and Fixtures
Sometimes it’s the little details that make a big difference in kitchen design and these budget friendly kitchen makeover tips. This is certainly the case with cabinet knobs, drawer pulls and faucet fixtures. Kitchen hardware comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and finishes and switching out old hardware gives your kitchen an instant boost. Some common hardware finishes for traditional kitchen design are antique brass, iron and bronze. Enhance a contemporary kitchen design with stainless steel, polished chrome and satin brass hardware. Consider color contrast when you choose new knobs, drawer pulls and faucets. Satin brass knobs look beautiful when contrasted with dark-colored cabinets or granite countertops. Installing a new faucet improves the function and look of your kitchen. You can get a model that has a vintage look or one that appears sleek and modern while you refresh your kitchen.

Add Built-ins for Better Organization and Room Layout
Organization is one of the most popular budget friendly kitchen makeover tips. If you have a small kitchen but a large family, built-in bench seating gives you more options for your space. Most kitchen re-modelers install bench seats in kitchen corners that are near windows. Yours don’t have to rely on natural sunshine if you install the right lighting in the space. You’ll complete the look of your new kitchen nook by adding a dining table and extra chairs. This set up lets you seat more people in your dining area than a conventional dining room table and chair set will allow. As a bonus, many built-in bench seats double as storage in which you can stow away extra flatware, cookware, or linens.

Non-perishable food items, spices, and dry goods that are placed haphazardly around your kitchen can make the space look cluttered and disorganized. Installing a custom pantry organization system is a good way to refresh your kitchen by creating a space for these items. Your built-in pantry can feature open shelving or the look of custom furniture.

Install New Countertops
Granite countertops are a necessity for luxury kitchens. This stunning and durable natural stone will instantly make your kitchen come to life. For the hard-working home cook, these natural stone surfaces take chops, slices and heat from cookware without any signs of damage. Even if you’re not a gourmet chef, you’ll look like one with beautiful granite countertops. When you think about completely remodeling your kitchen, granite countertops are often too expensive to seriously consider. Updating only parts of your kitchen gives you the budget friendly kitchen makeover so you can splurge on the granite countertops that you’ve always wanted.

Quartz, marble, soapstone, and Jerusalem stone are some other natural stone countertop materials to consider for your kitchen remodeling project. While natural stone countertops are durable, heat-resistant, and beautiful, they are porous and need periodic maintenance. Marble, Jerusalem stone, and granite countertops require annual sealing. You can keep soapstone countertops looking good by rubbing them with mineral oil monthly.

Upgrade Backsplash
When you refresh your kitchen and it includes an upgrade to your backsplash give yourself the opportunity to show your creativity and personal style. Today’s kitchens use all types of materials for backsplashes. It isn’t uncommon to see stainless steel, brick, concrete, painted wood and natural stone backsplashes in modern kitchens. Colored glass tiles also bring a dash of sparkle to your food preparation areas. Ceramic tile is the most versatile and cost-effective material for kitchen backsplashes. These tiles come in different colors, styles, and textures. They are easy to install and keep clean, and they don’t require any special maintenance. Whether you choose gleaming subway tiles or tiny mosaic ones to bring interest to your space, a new backsplash is an effective way to refresh your kitchen without spending a fortune.

Budget Friendly Kitchen Makeover Floor Ideas

Change Flooring
If your floor has deep stains on it and is starting to peel, that’s a sign you should invest in a new floor. You have many options from which to choose. Popular kitchen floor materials include hardwood, ceramic tile, travertine and vinyl. Hardwood is a lovely choice for many kitchens. Its warm hues complement spaces that are decorated in toasty shades of beige, cream, and tan. Wood floors that have deep, earthy tones help to ground the look of a contemporary kitchen design. However, this flooring might not be the right fit for everyone. Hardwood flooring costs more than most other flooring options, and you must wipe up spills quickly to avoid damaging the wood. Ceramic tile is durable and easy to keep clean and really helps your budget friendly kitchen makeover. It comes in a host of colors and textures; you can even get ceramic tiles that look like natural stone or wood. Travertine is a natural stone that wears well in traditional-style kitchens. It has better slip resistance than ceramic tile, but it requires more maintenance. Travertine stains easily, and you must promptly clean spills. You’ll also have to seal the stone tiles every year. Vinyl flooring is durable and easy to clean. It’s a cost-effective flooring solution for a kitchen refresh.

New Appliances Refresh Your Kitchen

If you’re like several homeowners, you’ve completely fallen for the new appliances that are available for today’s kitchens. You can get state-of-the-art appliances that stay hidden behind custom cabinetry, or you can pick a stainless-steel appliance package that gives the look of a professional kitchen. New refrigerators and freezers feature more efficient designs for food storage and many of them incorporate smart home technology. Did you see a recipe on You Tube that you want to try? You can get a sleek and trendy refrigerator that has an integrated computer screen on the door, which makes following online recipes easy. While offering a high-tech look when you refresh your kitchen.

Add Lighting
When remodeling kitchens, many property owners neglect to install adequate lighting to make their spaces more functional and inviting. Ambient, task and accent lights are the three types of lighting for homes. Ambient lights are general lights to brighten up your kitchen and task lighting shines above kitchen work areas such as islands, countertops and stoves. You can use accent lights to bring focus to special architectural details in the room or wall art. Designers recommend layering all three of these lights within a space for function, safety and beauty.

Paint is a Must for a Budget Friendly Kitchen Makeover

Adding a fresh coat of paint to your walls is an easy trick to make your space more inviting and luxurious. A new paint color can instantly enhance the look and feel of your kitchen. The paint color also has the power to inspire creativity, soothe moods and entice more buyers. When choosing new paint colors for your kitchen upgrade, let your cabinet, countertop and flooring colors be your guide. If you’ve got some beautiful, natural stone countertops that you want to make the star of your kitchen, then choose kitchen paint colors for your walls and ceiling that complement the warm or cool color of your countertops. A paint professional at your local hardware store can help you with paint color selections based on your home design and your personal sense of style. Before painting, make sure that you fill any holes in your walls. Also, it’s important to use painter’s tape and drop cloths to protect kitchen fixtures from getting damaged by paint. After preparing your work area, you’re ready to prime and paint the walls and refresh your kitchen.

Introduce Trim
Many high-end kitchens are notoriously generic, and that attribute doesn’t get better with age. You can add trim to your kitchen to give it a budget friendly kitchen makeover with a more decorative and polished look. Crown molding is a trim option that brings out the best in most kitchens. It comes in different styles, widths and materials to fit your kitchen design and budget. Chair rail was traditionally used to protect walls from scratches and scuff marks that were caused by chair movement. However, it’s now used as a popular decorative kitchen trim. You can also install wainscoting beneath chair rail, around kitchen islands and on backsplashes to give your kitchen more character and dimension. You can paint crown molding, chair rail and wainscoting in classic white or in shades that enhance other color choices in your kitchen.

Seven Necessary Professional Remodeling Contractors

Below we’ve compiled a list of seven professional remodeling contractors that will provide valuable services and insight for any type of home renovation project.

General Contractors
Some homeowners look to save money on remodels by acting as their own general contractor. This requires them to plan the work and hire separate contractors themselves. You can do this yourself if you have the ambition. But you’re passing up valuable knowledge and money saving tips.

For instance, quality remodeling contractors possess a knowledge of when they need subcontractors and when they don’t. In many cases, changing a light fixture doesn’t require an electrician. But, running a new electrical line does. This expertise will serve you well. Talented general contractors also have experience with the proper materials necessary for a quality job.

Structural Engineer or Architect
You don’t want to make alterations to a load-bearing wall that could weaken your home’s structure. When you make changes to walls, consult with professional remodeling contractors for help. Different areas and building codes enforce their own rules as to whether you need an architect or structural engineer for this task. Even an experienced general contractor may lack the know-how to tell if work will affect your home’s ability to bear stress. But an architect or engineer can examine your plans and will give you important advice about your home’s needs for a sound structure.

Quality Remodeling Contractors are Important

Plumber or Electrician
Talk to both of these professional remodeling contractors when doing a big job. This applies even if your remodel doesn’t include specific plumbing or electrical work. They can steer you through trouble spots you don’t even know about. Plumbing and electrical lines provide the heartbeat of your home and you don’t want to mess them up. Making mistakes in these areas of your home remodeling project can be costly and dangerous.

Interior Designer
Professional home designers do more than work on the look of a space. Many designers hold expertise in ergonomics, acoustics, and how people interact with spaces. A designer’s eye can help you make the best use of your new space. These quality remodeling contractors and their knowledge of building codes and safety will also serve your project well.

Insulation Professional
Even interior walls can benefit from adding insulation. When you do extensive work, you may lose insulation in some walls. So, if you change, tear out or add walls during your project, you’ll want an insulator to look at what you’ve done. This is important for many reasons but mainly to lower your utility bills. Inadequate insulation contributes to energy loss. An insulation pro makes sure your remodel gets off to an energy efficient start.

Home Inspector
You might associate this kind of work with selling your home. But a home inspector gives valuable insight into your project before it wraps up. They offer outside verification that work was done correctly. An inspector ca be one of the most important professional remodeling contractors. Inspectors can identify problems contractors didn’t notice. This includes fire separation and safety issues. They also make sure permits were pulled correctly. You’d rather hear this from your own inspector than from the building department later.

Your Insurance Agent
Most people don’t even think of this one. But your insurance policy is based on the condition of your home at the time your policy was originally enacted. Any changes or upgrades could trigger a change in coverage and leave you under insured.

Furthermore, your policy might impose requirements when remodeling. These can include hiring licensed professional remodeling contractorsor having an agent inspect the home. Consult your agent before and after work is complete. This ensures you’ll keep your coverage in shape.

Designing Your Popular Man Cave Ideas and Plans

Think billiard pool games, movie and media rooms, whiskey tasting at the bar, and decor composed of the finest sports memorabilia. No matter what your take is on the ideal man cave room is, this living space is distinctively your own. And chances are you’ve seen those remodeling television shows which feature man caves and overheard the negative perception of the most popular man cave ideas. Any man can design and implement these man cave ideas while creating a living space that’s functional, modern and respectable.

Size and Layout for Man Cave Rooms

Because they’re mostly located in basements, man caves can be fairly large and spacious.  However, there are many small man cave ideas and features as well. These are the three sizes you should consider before starting your man cave room.

  • Small Man Cave Plans
  • Medium Man Cave Plans
  • Large Man Cave Plans

The plan you choose will be determined by the amount of space in your home you wish to allocate to your man cave. Your man cave layout and features should be considered before starting your new room. This will save a lot of time while eliminating costly mistakes. You can approach this in two ways.

One: If working with an existing layout, pick and choose the main features you’d like to have and assign them to your existing spaces. Be sure you measure your layout and pick the features that will accommodate your space.

Two: If you’re renovating or designing a custom layout, first choose the features you’d like to have and design your man cave plans around them.

Most men preferred man cave rooms with an open concept and designated areas (TV room, bar, games, etc.) with all designated areas in view of one another.

TV Viewing Area is Important
One of the most important and popular man cave ideas to consider is the TV viewing area. Most finished basements and man caves include a TV viewing area.  You can opt for the full home theater room with surround sound or a more traditional television viewing section.  Or if you have a limitless budget, do both.

TV Size:
For the main TV, don’t go with anything smaller than 55″.  Additional televisions can be 32″ or bigger.

Type of TV:
The favorite is a large flat screen with high resolution and fast refresh rates, but you may prefer a projector.  Both are good options for any man cave.

TV Location:
Mounted up on the wall is one of the best locations for your man cave room.  Plan the placement so that you and your guests enjoy optimal viewing of the TV.  You don’t want the television set to the side or in a location that’s not ideal for watching (or that requires moving furniture in order to view it properly).

Stereo/Sound:
You definitely want a great sound system – likely plugged into your TV system for the ultimate multimedia experience.  Use wireless technology for placing speakers throughout the space.

Bar Areas for Your Popular Man Cave Ideas

You can be creative when designing your man cave bar.  Even if the traditional mini-bar isn’t for you, consider a coffee bar or wine cellar/tasting room. Essentially you want to create a “beverage area” in a way that is comfortable for people to enjoy whatever beverages you serve.

Mini bar designs vary tremendously.  You could go with wood, steel, or concrete.  It can be tucked away in a corner or be large and the main center of the space.  Whatever you do, offering comfortable bar stool seating is a must-have touch.

Must-have bar features:

  • Keg, refrigerator, plenty of glasses and a decent liquor selection.
  • Bar Stools… preferably within view of the TV.
  • Mini Bar TV – why not mount a flat screen TV in the bar for your “guest”

Video games:
Video games aren’t just for kids.  The games these days are incredible and there are games for everyone including adults.  If you’re going through the effort of creating these popular man cave ideas, be sure to budget a few hundred bucks for a video game set up.

In return we’ve put together this guide for the best man cave ideas and inspirations from around the world. You’ll discover interior design ideas for every type of living space imaginable including basements, garages and even attics. No matter what size your house may be, these ideas will help you put together the pieces and create a man cave masterpiece you will enjoy.

Popular Closet Design Trends

Closets are no longer just a space to store clothes, shoes, and accessories. These popular closet design trends have homeowners choosing to allocate significant square footage to their “dressing rooms.” To get a better idea of what closet design features homeowners are looking for in these luxurious spaces we’ve found nine closet design trends that stood out.

Nine Popular Closet Design Trends

Luxe Lighting
The closet design pros have cited integrated and often dramatic lighting as a request they’ve heard more from homeowners in recent years. Lighted rods and shelves, interior cabinet lights, lights that shine on cabinets, and LED lights highlighting other specific areas of the closet space seem to be coming up in designers closet design features.

Mixed Materials
We’ve also found that popular closet design trends often follow in the footsteps of kitchen trends. That pattern may be at play in the number of homeowners and designers asking for and installing closets that combine different colors and materials. Whereas for years you picked white, black, wood grain, whatever, now there’s a tremendous surge of color mixing. One example might be a base color for vertical panels and shelves, and another for drawers and doors.

Warmer Wood Looks
The rustic character that’s been such a staple of the popular farmhouse style appears to be making its way into closets as well. We are seeing closet design features migrating from ultramodern to transitional, a wanting for more warmth in the space, whether that’s wood-grain cabinetry or lighting and furnishings. Wood looks have additionally gained traction in the form of new textured melamine closet systems and other materials that appear more like natural wood than some earlier wood-grain iterations.

Dressing Rooms
The aspiring idea of a designated space just for getting dressed is no longer reserved for elite homeowners. These popular closet design trends are growing in popularity for all sizes and styles of homes.

Homeowners and designers are creating closet-dressing rooms in unused rooms of the house. While a walk-in closet was previously saved for the wealthy, everyone is now getting in the game. We see people converting dining rooms, living rooms and extra bedrooms into dressing rooms. There has been a shift from closets to dressing rooms, which includes a seating area, full-length mirror, vanity, etc.

There have been more decorated dressing room spaces, complete with details like seating, mirrors and art, appearing in the top 20 closet design features. In some instances, these dressing rooms capture a soft glamorous look and in other designs, richer colors and dramatic lighting made for edgier results.

White and Gray Colors
Professional designers are seeing more colorful options gaining in popularity such as blue, pink and purple closet features but classics like white and gray still dominate the market. Designers still say that white is the most popular choice for homeowners.

Gray, which has become a go-to shade in kitchens, bathrooms and other remodeled household spaces, is a favorite new neutral choice of popular closet design trends. The color gray is most prevalent in cabinetry and flooring. Designers have also seen a jump in a champagne-like color for painted closet surfaces. It’s not white, ivory or cream but a nice subtle combination of all three.

Brass Hardware
The pros say brushed or antique brass is a must for many homeowners. These same pros and designers also say that black and gunmetal finishes keep growing in popularity.

Classic silver drawer pulls and accents is also growing in popularity, signaling at least one disconnect between what homeowners seem to be choosing with designers and what’s still catching their eye online.

Getting the low-key look when selecting your closet design features. Investing in statement-making hardware packs a punch, even if cabinetry or other materials are relatively basic. You’re saving tons of money on the material and the faces, so you can spend a little extra on the hardware to really spice up your dressing room.

Getting the all-out look for your dressing room. Play up hardware and accents throughout the space that make other luxe details, like a statement lighting fixture, pop.

Hidden Features for Popular Closet Design Trends

Hideaway Features
The pros say, smart solutions that can neatly be tucked away remain a popular option. Designers often hide safes for valuables and integrates hidden panels or compartments into closet projects. Additionally, collapsible or pullout valet rods, hanging rods, ironing boards, drying racks and other features are desirable extras and are excellent choices for your closet design features.

Hideaway closet features are often tricky to spot in photos, but photos or blueprints that showcase a space’s capability to open or expand for more secretive space options.

Even if you’re not incorporating a slick hidden safe, adding more traditional features (such as drawers or cabinets) that keep messes contained behind closed doors or panels can achieve an organized feel. Open cubbies seem to be less popular than they once were. Everybody is either liking the cleaner look of seeing [their belongings] hanging, or [they’re] behind something.

Get creative with these popular closet design trends. In addition to hidden safes, pullout drying racks and other unexpected details, added amenities like ottomans can also be made to be tucked away and pulled out when needed while adding a lot of style.

Simple Shoe Setups
Professional designers are seeing a shift in many homeowners’ approach to shoe storage. Flat shoe shelves and hidden shoe storage seem to be more common than in years past. For years, everybody wanted an angled shoe shelf with a toe catch, and what happens is when you have sneakers or something that doesn’t have a heel, it has a tendency just to fall off. And the other thing is these slanted shoe racks eat up a ton of space.

Extravagant Closet Design Features

Extravagant Features
What the pros say. In general, closets appear to be spaces where more homeowners feel comfortable taking risks and having fun. People are taking the designs of their closets and private spaces less seriously than the rest of the home. That might mean they’re more willing to use a playful wallpaper pattern, bold colors or a nifty fold-away for their closet design features.

Even high-tech add-ons, such as an extraction ventilation system, is something homeowners are requesting. Removing unwanted smells from clothes after a night out is always a great tool. Or removing humidity from the wardrobe, avoiding damp clothes and unwanted moisture. Extraction helps to keep clothes smelling fresh and keeping the area dust-free.

When it comes to creating an updated closet space with all the latest bells and whistles, the possibilities are endless. The closet is now seen as a space worth investing in, when just a few years ago that wasn’t the case.

More homeowners are implementing these popular closet design trends. Where it used to only be people who were in $800,000-and-up homes that did their closet. It’s become much more common and much more expected from a builder. Nobody wants those darn wire shelves anymore.

The Most Popular Kitchen Backsplash Trends

Shades of the Desert
One of the neutral kitchen backsplash styles are always on trend and they’re a safe bet for resale. But there’s one neutral color story is rising above the rest, dominating the design world at large.

Homeowners are seeing a huge favor for what is called “Shades of the Desert”. Anything that falls into that terra cotta or sandy color is following on the heels of the brass trend. People are going for these warmer color tones.

The palette can really stand out with certain shapes, like star and cross tile. The star and cross shape has been trending as one of the popular kitchen backsplash trends for the last year, especially when paired with those warmer desert hues.

Colorful Saturated Colors
A colorful backsplash can breathe energy into your daily routine, from your morning coffee to your weekend meal prep. It’s also a great way to bring designer appeal to your kitchen. Designers and homeowners are really embracing kitchen backsplash styles with saturated colors. This trend leans towards more dramatic but classic colors. Lovely saturated green shades along with some deep colors like navy blue. And flagstone is another good one that has an earthy quality.

Black and White Kitchen Backsplash Styles

Basic Black and White
Basic black and white tile can add classic, yet inspiring flare to your kitchen backsplash. Among the popular hand-painted tile collections, the black and white collection is definitely one of the most popular kitchen backsplash trends. It’s a nice option where you get that pattern and the texture, but it feels a little bit more classic.

Mute and Shine Contrast
A backsplash is a perfect opportunity to introduce contrast to the kitchen. We see super neutral kitchens, where there’s a blonde wood and lighter countertops, with a beautiful, earthy green backsplash. And we also see the opposite, where people do these lovely colorful painted cabinets and the backsplash is a super simple glaze, like a shade of white.

You can also create contrast by pairing opposite finishes. When you have a high-gloss backsplash paired next to super matte countertops or cabinetry, the colors are going to pull everything together, but the sheen contrast is going to let each element have its moment and adds contrast for these kitchen backsplash styles.

Classics Kitchen Backsplash Styles

Classic Shapes and Styles
Classic shapes and styles are often underestimated. They’re some of the most affordable. And once you have them, you can get creative and move beyond the simple horizontal subway pattern.

We always try to remind people of the design possibilities with something as simple as a square or a rectangle. You will see plenty of subway tile installations, but more often we’re seeing rectangular tile installed in a straight back pattern or what we call a soldier stack. Hexagons are one of the very popular kitchen backsplash trends and it’s always a classic favorite.

Full-Height Backsplash
When you plan your installation, consider whether you’d like the look of a full-height backsplash. A lot of people think backsplash and they think, ‘I’m just going to put this tile from my countertop to my upper cabinets. But, if they have the space and it makes sense, a lot of times we see people go full height with tile.

This is a smart move to make from the start. If you don’t do it now and you change your mind later, it’ll be harder to match another batch of tile to your original installation.

Hints of Character
Feeling inspired beyond your budget when choosing your kitchen backsplash styles? Even a little bit of tile can go a long way, and you can get a gorgeous hand-painted backsplash at a comfortable price point.

There’s a lot of beautiful things you can do with less tile. You don’t have to go full tilt. You can do shorter backsplashes, do the wall that has your stove on it or a clean strip of tile behind the stove. And maybe a standard four-inch splash that runs around the rest of the countertop.

One final word of caution: Don’t skimp or cut corners on your kitchen designs. Make sure the kitchen design plans spell out every detail, so it doesn’t confuse those involved. Proper planning often cuts down on the length of a backsplash job by 30 percent. Good plans can also reduce cost overruns and surprises.

Best Kitchen Countertop Materials

Best Kitchen Countertop Materials and Styles

Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of five popular materials to help you choose the best countertops for your kitchen:

Top 5 Best Kitchen Countertop Materials

Granite: Granite has long been one of the best kitchen countertop materials, and for good reason: It’s durable, heat-resistant, attractive and easy to clean. Important to note, granite is cut from veins of naturally occurring stone, which makes each slab entirely unique. Granite prices will run the gamut, with more exotic stones coming at a higher price. But there are many options available in a lower price range. One downside to granite is that it’s porous, so it must be sealed once a year to maintain its appearance and durability.

Engineered Quartz: Engineered quartz is another popular material for kitchen countertops. In fact, many designers argue that it’s taken granite’s place at the top. That’s largely because it’s tougher than granite. It’s non-porous, so it’s resistant to cracking, scratching and staining. And it doesn’t require the maintenance and sealing that come with natural stone. Because the material is engineered, it comes in uniform slabs. But there are several attractive colors and design options available, ranging from sleek, modern monotones to traditional marble look-alikes. Engineered quartz is one of the more expensive countertop options. Typically, you’ll spend as much or more for engineered quartz countertops as you will for granite.

Mid-Range Priced Kitchen Countertops

Butcher Block: Wooden butcher block countertops are not only functional and durable, but they can also add warmth and beauty to any kitchen. The downside to wooden butcher block countertops is that they require frequent maintenance. Wood must be sealed about once a month to prevent damage from heat and moisture, and regular wax and oil treatments will keep it looking like one of the best kitchen countertop materials. The good news is that minor damages such as scratches and small burns can typically be sanded out. Wooden butcher block countertops typically fall about mid-range in terms of pricing.

Concrete: Concrete countertops offer natural strength and heat resistance, as well as the opportunity for full customization. Not only can homeowners choose from an array of precast colors and designs, but they may also opt to include additives such as rocks, shells and colored glass to add texture or create a look all their own. Concrete countertops used to crack and chip easily, but material innovations have addressed these issues. Concrete is a good option for both modern and traditional interior kitchen countertops. And, like butcher block, it typically falls about mid-range in terms of pricing.

Most Affordable Kitchen Countertops

Laminate: Laminate (commonly referred to by brand name Formica) is one of the most affordable countertop materials. Generally made with paper pressed between plastic resins and bonded to particle board or plywood, laminate is durable but easily damaged. The downside to laminate is that it’s not heat or scratch resistant. The upside is that it comes in a wide range of colors and textures that mimic higher-end materials at a much lower cost. And, its price point makes it much easier to replaceable than other countertop materials.

Of course, these are only a few of the kitchen countertop materials available. You may also consider options like soapstone, tile and stainless steel, for example, which all come with their own pros and cons. Ultimately, the best kitchen countertop materials for your kitchen will depend on your budget, use and design preferences.

Additional Kitchen Remodeling Costs

A professional remodeling company will include charges for project management and miscellaneous costs. These costs vary by company, but on average, professional project management equals about 11 percent of the kitchen remodeling cost. Most companies make between 8 to 10 percent profit, and the cost of running the business and overhead can be 12 to 18 percent.

Also, if you move the locations of appliances or plumbing during your kitchen remodel, keep in mind the kitchen sink is usually the most expensive cost of any of these moves. Moving the location of the sink or plumbing can add between $2,000 and $4,000 in addition to the cost of cutting holes in other rooms, therefore adding to the kitchen remodeling cost breakdown.

Moving windows to accommodate a new kitchen design also is a cost to consider. It’s safe to assume a price of $1,500 to $4,500 per window moved. This should include labor and materials.

Online Home Furnishing Tools

Just over a year ago Amazon launched its first in-home furniture brands and online home furnishing tools, with private labels Rivet and Stone Beam. This past fall, it began experimenting with a new, more visual way to shop for furniture and other merchandise online with a Pinterest like recommendation service. Now, Amazon is venturing further into online home furnishings with the debut of Amazon Showroom a visual design tool that allows you to place furniture into a virtual living room, customize the décor, then shop the look and style you have chosen.

The retailer didn’t formally announce the launch of Amazon Showroom, but a spokesperson confirmed it’s a recent test that’s now available on Amazon.com and in the Amazon mobile app.

Amazon Online Home Furnishing Tools

You can access it from the “Accounts & Lists” drop-down on the web; the Home, Garden & Pets department on the web; or the Home & Kitchen department on the mobile app.

Currently, the new feature is focused on helping Amazon shoppers put together a living room with these new online home furnishing tools. In a virtual setting, you can adjust the wall color and the flooring, then swap out each item in the space with one of your own choosing — including the sofa, coffee table, chair, end table, lamp, rug and even the art on the wall.

If you wish to use these new home decorating tools, click on the piece in question, then pick another from the right-side panel where a scrollable list of options are available, along with their prices. This selection of online home furnishing tools can be filtered by a number of factors, as well, like price, style, color, material, brand and star rating.

One-Click Online Home Furnishing Tools

As you work on your project, you can save your room design to pull up later. And you can save more than one room design, if you’re trying to decide between different styles. When satisfied, an “Add to cart” button lets you place all into your cart for checkout with just one click.

Amazon Showroom, a name that’s almost a cruel reference to Amazon’s ability to turn brick-and-mortar stores into showrooms for online shoppers isn’t the retailer’s first attempt at helping shoppers visualize items in their home ahead of purchase. The company also launched an AR shopping feature in its app in 2017, which allows you to place a virtual item in your camera view to see how it goes in your own room. That can be useful if shopping for a single item, but less so when designing a complete room.

Home furnishings is still an emerging category for online retail, not only because they’re hard to visualize, but also because heavy items are expensive to ship. However, major retailers see the potential in this growing market online home furnishing tools.

Walmart for example launched a new home shopping site for décor and furniture in 2017. This new shopping site features its own in-house brands and more visual, editorial style images. It has also snapped up other home furnishing and décor retailers, including Hayneedle and Art.com while building its own visual search.

Amazon confirmed the launch of Showroom in a statement. The retailer wouldn’t say when the feature debuted, exactly, but a Twitter account was tweeting links to a pre-production site earlier in December 2017. Amazon confirmed that Amazon Showroom its online home furnishing tools program was built entirely in-house.

Amazon Showroom is a new way for customers to visualize their home furnishing purchases when shopping online. Amazon Showroom presents customers with a virtual living room, where they can customize the décor and furniture selection providing the ability to visually compare to scale representations of furniture items together in a room to determine how an item will fit with the style of a room and work with other complimentary pieces. The result is a photorealistic rendering of a room that answers the question: How will this all look together?

The feature is live for all customers on the web and in the Amazon app.
