Well then there’s never been a better time to invest in one of these smart diy home security systems. The market is filled with kits that consist of simple hubs and a combination of wireless sensors and cameras that you can easily install without worrying about running cables or ruining drywall.

Plus, there are no long-term contracts to worry about. If you’ve been feeling that security around your home is a little lacking, these kits make the perfect starting place. Here’s a list of some of our favorites. And if you’re uncertain whether you want to do it yourself or have one installed for you, we also have a list of the best home security systems, which is a combination of professionally installed and smart diy home security systems to help you.

Top 6 Smart DIY Home Security Systems

#1 Simplisafe
SimpliSafe is one of the smart diy home security systems with a brand new (and much better) look and better functionality, including dual cellular and Wi-Fi connections, so the system won’t be disrupted by a power outage. The Knox is an excellent choice for larger homes where you already know you’ll need more than one or two sensors for full protection.

It comes with a base station and separate keypad, a key fob, six door sensors, two motion sensors, a siren, and a smoke detector, all in one package. Professional, no-contract monitoring is available for $15 per month, and you can add extra devices like outdoor cameras, smart locks, and more. It’s an excellent diy home security system if you want to start off big.

#2 Nest Secure
Nest Secure is the best example of what a home security starter kit should be: Simple, easy to understand, and unobtrusive while it’s working—but with plenty of options for expansion or additional features. The kit comes with the Guard hub, a round device with a number pad that tracks all the other sensors, but also incorporates a siren and motion sensor of its own. You also get two Detect motion sensors to set up where you please around the house, and two Tag key fobs that will let you pass through them. You can disarm the detectors with a code, or simply choose a silent mode to avoid triggering the alarm when necessary.

It’s one of the more expensive smart diy home security systems for three motion detectors and no cam, but Nest’s devices are state of the art, responsive, and minimalistic, so you really get what you pay for. You can add indoor or outdoor cams, video doorbells, and additional motion detectors whenever you want to expand the system. You can also arrange for mobile notification and enable professional monitoring via Brinks Home if you prefer.

#3 Abode
Abode is much like the Nest Secure. Abode’s starter kit includes a Gateway that acts as a hub (although the excellent app also allows for full control), a door / window sensor, a general motion sensor, and a key fob for access. Where Abode differs is in compatibility: While Nest Secure is designed to only work with a few Nest devices, Abode offers compatibility with Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi technologies, allowing for many different third-party integrations, including devices that you may already own.

Add in the many different sensor options you can buy from Abode, and this one of the best smart diy home security systems around for expansions or integrating with older devices. It’s also compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands.

#4 Ring
Ring security kits combine a few more traditional elements of diy home security systems with a newer approach that works well if you are comfortable with a classic setup. The kit comes with a base station, a separate keypad to install on the wall, a contact sensor, a motion detector, and range extender (plus compatibility with all other Ring products, specifically their video doorbells and security cameras).

That’s an excellent array of products for a great price, and they are easy to set up and understand even if your experience with home security systems is limited. The keypad allows you to switch between Away, Home, and Disarmed modes, like traditional systems, but with useful features like programmable delays for arming, and push notifications for your phone app.

Ring also offers 24/7 professional monitoring and video recording for a fee, with no cancellation fees if you decide to go back to a simpler setup.

#5 Samsung Smartthing
Let’s explain this kit’s origins: ADT partnered with Samsung to create one of the new smart diy home security systems that is compatible with Samsung SmartThing devices, but primarily focused on ADT’s fledgling DIY-friendly smart security devices. So, the kit is a good choice for those who appreciate the historic work that ADT has done in home security…and want ADT’s professional management services to supplement their diy home security approach.

The kit itself comes with a large touchscreen hub, a motion detector, and two sensors for your windows and doors. Make no mistake, ADT intends for this system to be paired with its professional monitoring, which means monthly fees—but there is a “no monitoring” option you can choose. However, the system really shines when you see how easily it can become a whole house smart platform. ADT has sensors to monitor everything from carbon monoxide to water leaks, and SmartThings has devices to manage lighting, thermostats, door locks, and more. The kit gives you a hub to control everything from…as long as you’re willing to stick with these brands.

#6 OOMA
Ooma has one of the smart diy home security systems that’s priced in a much more affordable range. The kit includes the Telo hub and a motion sensor—which may not seem like much, but it comes with a big bonus: You get free home monitoring for the sensor, with the added ability to route a 911 call through your home phone for assistance if something seems wrong (the sensor will push notifications to your phone if the alarm is set to off). Ooma does let you add door, motion, and leak sensors to the system as needed, but the kit itself is better suited for an apartment or smaller home.

Voice Controlled Smart Locks

Existing Options for Voice Controlled Smart Locks

PIN Genie Touchscreen: The patented PIN Genie keypad randomly generates a keypad order when anyone approaches the door. This ensures that codes cannot be accessed by anyone watching the user typing it in. This is a great feature for these voice controlled smart locks.

3D Fingerprint Scanner: A biometric module below the touchpad allows users to open the door using their finger.

Lockly App: The app allows users to connect to and control their voice controlled smart locks. The app can be used to generate offline access codes via Bluetooth without an internet connection and set activation periods for as little as a few minutes.

Key Lock: A traditional key lock is located inside a switch on the door handle or central panel.

The Secure Link, available packaged with the Secure Pro and as a separate accessory, enables Wi-Fi connectivity across all voice-controlled security product models, including the Secure and Secure Plus. This module enables virtual assistant connectivity, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity from anywhere in the world and real-time status updates.

“The availability of the Secure Pro and Secure Link is proof of our dedication to the development of new, innovative products in the world of home security and smart locks. We are excited to work with our national retail partners as we make Lockly products even more accessible to consumers seeking the most advanced smart lock solution for their home, office, or rental property,” says Lee Zheng, CEO and Founder of Lockly.

The voice controlled smart locks are available in Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze finishes and deadbolt or latch hardware configurations. The lock operates on AA batteries, which last at least one year, supported by a backup battery. The Lockly Secure Pro starts at $299, and the Secure Link console starts at $79.99. The Lockly Secure Plus starts at $199.99. lockly.com

According to the latest edition of NAHB’s study, What Home Buyers Really Want, out of the top home technology features, 46 percent of recent and prospective home buyers want a security camera in their home, more than any other home technology feature listed in the survey. The study is based on a survey that asks recent and prospective home buyers (people who bought homes in the previous three years or are planning to do so in the next three years) about the home security technology features that they would like in a home and a community. The information below shows the top 10 most wanted home technology features as well as the share of home buyers who currently have each particular feature.

Accurate Window Replacement Cost

Although you may take your windows for granted, they remain an integral part in maintaining a comfortable home. So, after years of home ownership, you’ll probably have to replace a few windows in your home if not all your windows. Therefore, you will need an accurate window replacement cost before starting your project. It’s important that you review all options listed below for replacement window installation, types of windows and cost.

Unfortunately, these invisible barriers are fragile and can be broken with minimal amounts of force. The cost to replacement windows will vary upon size, number of windows needed, style and quality, but despite the many brands and options available, accurate window replacement cost and installation are easy to find if you know what you’re looking for.

CAD Pro has helped thousands of homeowners, remodeling professionals, builders and contractors plan and design all types of remodeling projects. CAD Pro is used by NARI professional remodelers and contractors. CAD Pro is also used by NHBA home builders and contractors.

Accurate Window Replacement Cost

Accurate Window Replacement Cost and Installation

Are your window frames rotting?
Before you can create an accurate window replacement cost, it’s important to inspect the existing window frames for damage or rot from insects and moisture. If the window’s frame is soft to the touch, cracking or showing other signs of wear, it will need to be replaced. If it’s still solid, you can opt to simply install new glass, which will save you money and time.

If you have to replace the wooden frames, expect your replacement window installation and materials to double.

Accurate Window Replacement Costs

Before you construct a window replacement estimate, it’s important to have a general idea as to where you plan on purchasing your new replacement windows.

Big-box stores may be the best option if you don’t want to get “hands on.” These stores will generally have fair prices for material and great insurance, but the commission and installation costs may be high.

It’s important that you find qualified contractors and window manufacturers before you start your replacement window installation project.

Here are some window replacement cost breakdowns. For a standard-size, double-hung, double-pane (energy efficient), vinyl window, expect to pay between $400 and $650, including installation.

Wood windows are more expensive. The cost of a wood replacement window can range between $750 and $1,500 per window and installation.

If the entire window and framing must be removed (down to the studs), be prepared to add at least $50 to $150 per installation of each window. This is referred to as new construction windows or “full-frame” replacement windows and requires more work at an additional cost. This must be considered if you want an accurate window replacement cost.

Although the overall cost to replace windows can be very steep, it should be looked at as an investment, and you can reasonably expect your home’s value to increase.

Replacement Window Installation and Styles

Depending on climate or preferences, there are several different types of windows, each of which features its own set of attributes and cost.

Double-Hung Windows
Double-hung windows are designed to be opened from the top or bottom, are great for hard-to-reach areas, and are generally the most inexpensive. These traits make double-hung windows the most commonly installed type of replacement window.

Tilt-Out Windows
Tilt-out windows fold in or out to reveal the glass’s exterior, which allows it to be cleaned from inside your home. These types of windows are great for areas where exterior accessibility is limited, but they are typically more expensive than standard double-hung windows.

Double-Pane Glass
Double-pane glass is widely available with the different encasement types, but it does carry an enhanced cost. Double-pane glass features an airtight space that is filled with inert gas. This method of construction helps with climate control, and paired with a properly sealed home, you can expect to save on utility costs.

High-Performance Glass
Depending on your environment (or your wallet), you might want to explore the performance offered from the different types of specialty glass. You can get triple-pane windows for added savings, impact-resistant windows for areas of extreme conditions, or windows with shades built between the glass for a touch of modern living. These high-performance glass types are the most expensive to procure, but the added benefits may be worth the extra cost and these features will need to considered before hand if you want an accurate window replacement cost.

Bathroom Remodeling Prices

A bathroom remodel is one of those projects that can improve your daily life but it’s important to understand bathroom remodeling prices. Better lighting, efficient fixtures and colors that suit your personal style can make your mornings more positive and your evenings more calming. And if you consider efficient bathroom remodeling costs, it will be easy to include a double vanity to split with your partner, making that wish a reality while reducing stress and tension.

Homeowners typically spend between $5,000 and $18,000 to remodel their bathrooms. And the average project falls around $12,000. Of course, mid-range to upscale bathroom remodels can cost anywhere from $25,000 to $65,000 or more.

Bathroom Remodeling Prices

Bathroom Remodeling Prices and Guidelines

Factors for Bathroom Remodeling Prices

The Scope of the Remodel
The extent of an efficient bathroom remodeling plan will go a long way in determining its cost. A partial remodel will allow you to maximize an existing layout and tap into existing infrastructure. But with a full-gut remodel, there are more cost factors like electrical, plumbing upgrades and structural changes. If you’re only doing a partial remodel now, you’ll also want to take any future plans into account and work with a professional so that each step is done in the right order while considering bathroom remodeling prices.

Your Existing Bathroom
The age of your current materials and fixtures, the size of your bathroom, and whether you’ll make changes to the room’s layout/floor plan will all affect your bathroom remodeling prices. Remodeling a smaller bathroom with minor upgrades will cost much less than remodeling a large bathroom and installing high-end counter-tops, a high-efficiency toilet and a brand-new shower.

Materials and Labor
Materials and installation rates can significantly impact your final cost. But it doesn’t always pay to use low-grade materials to save money. It’s important that you do your homework and learn which materials will have the best value for any efficient bathroom remodeling project. And it’s equally important that you hire licensed and reputable contractors for a quality remodel.

Quality Materials
Materials play a big role in overall costs, and they also determine how much maintenance your bathroom will need and how long it will endure. Bathrooms see a lot of activity and moisture, and your remodeling efforts will go further and last longer if you install durable materials. Plumbing fixtures and hardware are part of your material costs, and it’s worth it to explore all options when considering your bathroom remodeling prices. Toilets, faucets and shower-heads are extremely efficient these days, and you can save money down the road if you upgrade to more efficient fixtures now.

Hiring and Professional Labor
According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), labor and design costs account for roughly 20 to 25 percent of a bathroom remodel’s total cost. This is an area in which you don’t want to skimp. Quality installation can make all the difference in your project and will assure you of an efficient bathroom remodeling project. As you’re interviewing pros, look for a remodeler with the following:

  • A portfolio with examples of projects similar to yours.
  • References who will attest to their skill and process.
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to make, and stand by, a thorough contract.
  • A team and/or network of contractors that they trust and can vouch for.
  • Proper licensing, bonding and insurance.
  • Average Reported Costs

The cost of your bathroom remodel will vary depending on the choices you make and the space you’re working with. Below are the average costs of various aspects of bathroom remodeling prices, as reported by homeowners and professional remodelers. As you explore these costs, remember that every remodel is different – and mid-range to upscale remodels can cost $25,000 to $65,000 and more. To get a better idea of what your project might cost, consult with at least three-bathroom remodelers and compare their quotes.

Remodeling Cost Breakdown
Cabinets             $2,000 – $8,000             High-End $19,000 plus

Countertops      $2,200 – $4,500               High-End $8,000 plus

Flooring              $1,200 – $5,000               High-End $12,000 plus

New Tubs           $1,200 – $6,000               High-End $9,000 plus

New Shower      $1,200 – $8,000               High-End $10,000 plus

New Toilets        $200 – $800                      High-End $900 plus

New Sinks          $200 – $700                     High-End $1,200 plus

Plumbing            $500 – $3,00                    High-End $3,500 plus

** These prices reflects cost of installation, not including the price of each product.

Depending on your goals, you should also think about:

  • Walls and ceilings
  • Structural changes
  • Mirror(s)
  • Light fixtures
  • Radiant heating if necessary

Curious how your bathroom remodeling prices and actual costs will be? Call for quotes and discuss your options with quality licensed contractors in your area. And be sure to research your potential contractors and your preferred materials before you make big decisions therefore creating an efficient bathroom remodeling project that you will enjoy.

Proven Home Security Ideas

Is your home as safe as you think? We all like to adapt a “it won’t happen to me” mentality, but the reality isn’t always that secure and if you follow these safer home concepts, they will offer a great deal of peace of mind for you and your family. For instance, there are an average of 3.7 million burglaries each year according to the Bureau of Justice. This means home invasions and intrusions happen just about everywhere, no matter how safe you think your home is. Here are 6 great ideas for proven home security ideas that will you let go of some of that stress.

6 Proven Home Security Ideas

ONEUnderstand How Criminals Think
When considering safer home concepts, we all have a big misunderstanding of how criminals think and work. We can blame Hollywood for this. In the action movies criminals, all think and act a certain way. They’re always dressed in black, they look suspicious, and they act out their crimes under the cover of darkness.

Proven home security ideas have revealed that in reality, home invasions don’t always look like this. Criminals often dress in street clothes, sometimes even posing as service workers. They usually scope out the area of the crime before the actual invasion, and they almost always act during the daytime. That’s right, they invade homes in the daylight. Why’s this? Because they know most people are away during the day and there will be fewer people to spot them. With over 4,500 home burglaries a day in the United States, that’s a lot to keep an eye on.

TWO – Invest in an Alarm System
One of the best proven home security ideas is an alarm system, they are literal lifesavers. An alarm system shows criminals you take your safety seriously, and it will deter anyone who might be looking for an easy target. Even better, these systems have advanced features that help you monitor your home even when you’re away. This is a peace of mind we all need. Read this blog article from Alarm Grid for more information about alarm systems and how it will apply to safer home concepts.

THREE – Be Careful on Social Media
Social media is a great way to communicate with loved ones, but it can also be a dangerous place if you aren’t careful. Do you like to post when you’re on vacation or away from home? What about your new fancy purchases? Posting these things might seem like harmless fun, but you’re actually alerting criminals that your home is empty and that there are expensive belongings waiting to be grabbed.

FOUR – Light Your Home
One of the easiest of the proven home security ideas is lighting. Lighting will go a long way to protect your home. Not only should your home be well lit when you’re away and at night to alert criminals that you’re home, but you should also install lights in your yard. Why’s that? Once again, it comes down to making yourself a difficult target. If criminals can’t get close to your home without being spotted, they’ll move on.

FIVE – Watch Your Trash
Do you throw away boxes and other items without a second thought? You should probably take a closer look at your trash before you throw it away. When you throw away boxes for expensive devices or equipment, you’re letting criminals know there’s something in your home worth taking. Instead, destroy these boxes or take them directly to a recycling facility.

SIX – Talk to Your Neighbors
It’s easy to feel like you’re in this alone, but your neighbors probably have all the same fears you have about intruders. Talking to your neighbors and looking out for each other is the best of the proven home security ideas. It’s a great way to protect your own home and make your community a safer place.

9 Ways to Improve Remodeling Contractor Efficiency

Just think of all the daily tasks you could handle more efficiently, like estimates, invoices, quotes, change orders, RFIs, site instructions, subcontractor agreements, worksite diaries, meeting notes, and more. Currently most days for remodeling contractors are consumed with doing the work by themselves.  Remodeling contractor productivity balances project work with running the business as a whole.

The master carpenter thinks a lot about a better way to run his business between saw cuts and hammer blows. Yes, it would be a mobile app. But not just any mobile app. A chance encounter on an Instagram carpentry page introduced an app, called Contractor WorkZone from Trimble that offered at least nine key benefits.

Five: Low Cost. No big monthly fee like some contractor productivity apps. McGraw tried that and was sorry. “I couldn’t justify the high monthly fee,” McGraw says.

Six: Subcontractor Friendly. Email messages right from the app to any iOS or Android phone. No need for subs to download the app to receive regular email messages from you.

Seven: Rapid Workflow Integration. Simplicity, speed, and high functionality come together in a natural, highly intuitive way without a big learning curve.

Eight: Future-Proof. The app keeps pace with the changing needs of business with continuous updates.

Nine: Brand Name Trust and Confidence. The app is back by the resources of a company trusted worldwide for quality, service, and how to improve remodeling contractor efficiency.

Improve Efficiency with Contractor WorkZone

It’s also great for site diaries. I take lots of pictures which helps me order materials,” Remodeling Professional.

“It’s definitely a big part of my business now”. “I send out estimates from my truck. No more paperwork after supper. I’m faster, better organized, and more competitive.”

No one has a magic wand for estimates, invoices, and other time-consuming paperwork. But Contractor WorkZone has developed something that works great for the remodeling business and remodeling contractor productivity. Learn more about how Contractor WorkZone could help simplify your workflow

Desired Home Buyer Preferences

A majority of desired home buyer preferences indicated preferences towards granite countertops and stainless steel kitchen appliances, according to a new home buyer survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders. The survey, What Home Buyers Really Want (2019 Edition), found that there is no clear majority on preferred cabinet finishes. Desired Home Buyer Preferences and Home Buyer Survey

Desired Home Buyer Preferences with Colors and Finishes

Respondents have a clear favorite when it comes to appliance color. Sixty-seven percent want a stainless steel color while 15% each want white and black. The remaining 3% of respondents cited a preference for some other color.

Respondents also have a clear desired home buyer preference when it comes to countertop material: 57% want granite or natural stone countertops. Quartz/engineered stone comes in at a distant second place, preferred by 21% of respondents. Much smaller minorities are interested in either solid surface (12%) or laminate (8%).

Findings of Desired Home Buyer Preferences

Findings from the new home buyer survey show that there is no clear majority when it comes to finish and color preferences of kitchen cabinets. About the same share of respondents give traditional and contemporary cabinets the same desirability rating: 62% and 58%, respectively. Almost a third of respondents—32%—want white cabinets, not much higher than the 26% who prefer a medium brown cabinet color.
